So when Nas was in middle school, I want to say, there was this extended custody battle between his parents. They would have these singing and dancing shows that they would choreograph themselves and put on shows for their friends and family. He and his brother would find old half-filled paint cans and try to sell them and make a couple of bucks. And talking to Nas and to one of his brothers, Lamarco, about their childhood, it just sounds like they were having a blast all the time. And so I think they had her steady hand, and they had each other. But their grandmother was really like the linchpin foundation of their lives. His mother and his grandmother were in Bankhead Courts, which was a pretty grim public housing project inside Atlanta. He grew up kind of shuttling back and forth between his two parents. OK, we’re here to talk because you got to interview Lil Nas X. She walked me through his entire life, from his childhood in Atlanta to his teen years on Twitter, to where we are today. We’ve seen queer artists before, but what Nas is doing is to put his sexuality front and center of his pop star identity in the way that straight people do every single day without thinking a lot about it. She says he’s doing something entirely new. And she spent time with Lil Nas X right before these songs dropped. My colleague Jazmine Hughes is a writer for the Magazine. (SINGING) I told you long ago on the road, I got what they waiting for. but two songs that have provided the soundtrack of the summer. And Lil Nas X, even if he’s not in your dreams, he’s definitely been everywhere.
